Neighborhood committees

presentation

In 2020, the municipality decided to involve residents in municipal life by creating neighborhood committees.

Citizens committed to improving local life

Neighborhood committees are made up of residents who work with the municipality to improve the quality of life and conviviality in their neighborhoods. It is made up of a college of residents and local players (members of associations or company staff), all of them volunteers.

Neighborhood committees are :

A place for citizens to express themselves, listen and collaborate.

The neighborhood committee plays an essential role as a link between residents and the municipality. It enables local concerns to be voiced, and ideas to be put forward for improving the living environment. It also participates in discussions on local projects. As an instrument of citizen consultation, the neighborhood committee helps to improve problem-solving and strengthens the town council's ability to address local issues and needs.

Neighborhood committee members:

  • are the point of contact between residents and elected representatives;
  • are attentive to the evolution of their neighborhood;
  • inform themselves, inform residents and are informed by the municipality;
  • see the problems;
  • propose solutions and activities for their neighborhood.

What does the neighborhood committee do?

Its activities focus not on defending individual interests, but on issues of general interest (roads, traffic, cleanliness, neighborhoods, etc.). It is also concerned with community life and local events, such as neighborhood parties and meals, ....

What territory does a neighborhood committee cover?

The neighbourhood committee's scope of action is determined by the municipality according to the topology of the town. In Saint-Avold, 8 neighborhood committees represent the different districts.

You too can take part in the life of your neighborhood

Why join a neighborhood committee?

As a democratic forum, it enables residents to express themselves freely and participate to the best of their ability in improving the quality of life in their neighborhood.

How much time can you devote to the neighborhood committee?

Commitment to the committee is for a period of two years, and members are free to participate as they see fit.
A maximum of 4 evening meetings attended by elected representatives are organized over the course of a year.
In between, the committee is free to organize meetings or project groups.

What skills do I need to join a neighborhood committee?

No skills are required to join a neighborhood committee.
Each member brings a diversity of ideas to the table, and exchanges ideas in a spirit of mutual respect.
Open-mindedness, solidarity and tolerance ensure good cohesion between members.

Who can join a neighborhood committee?

Residents must :

  • live in the area concerned;
  • be over 16 years of age;
  • not be an elected official or local authority employee.

Local players must have a link with the neighborhood (company location, association head office).

The neighborhood committee listens to you, informs you and relays your ideas to the municipality.

As a link between the municipality and local residents, the committee informs the municipality of residents' concerns, suggestions and comments. It also informs residents of municipal projects. The committee makes proposals for actions and events in the neighborhoods, and has a participatory budget dedicated to urban development. The committee can be consulted by the municipality on certain projects. However, it has no decision-making power, as the municipal council alone is competent to decide on projects for the commune.

The neighborhood committee's term ended in 2025; it is currently inactive.
