ROLE OF THE MUNICIPAL POLICE

The work of the Police Municipale is essentially preventive.

Its main areas of investigation are public order, security, safety and health.

 MISSIONS

Police duties

  • Parking surveillance
  • Observation of Highway Code offences for which the P.M. is competent (1st to 4th class offences)
  • Surveillance of public places
  • General neighborhood watch
  • Supervision of pupils entering and leaving school premises
  • Spot traffic control
  • Security at certain events
  • Survey of wrecked or improperly parked vehicles to be impounded
  • Monitoring display conditions
  • Road safety missions in schools
  • Enforcement of municipal bylaws, prevention mission
  • Fighting noise in neighborhoods - Animal straying

Administrative tasks 

  • Permanences at the P.M. to welcome the public
  • Requests for information (administrative inquiries)
  • Drafting of municipal by-laws concerning traffic and parking
  • Registration and transmission of fines
  • Information reports to the mayor and his delegates, as well as to the local police officer, for investigation and prosecution.
  • Infringement and contravention reports
  • Availability reports
  • Occupation of the communal domain

THE MAYOR'S ROLE

The mayor has general police powers. He takes decisions designed to maintain public order, and ensures that they are carried out. As well as being a civil registrar, he or she is also a judicial police officer, under the authority of the prefect and the public prosecutor. Municipal police officers assist him in his policing duties.
